Graded NM-MT 8 by PSA. Hall of Famer. Among more than 950 copies recorded in PSA’s census reporting, just three examples have been placed at a higher, unqualified tier. Lou Gehrig had one of baseball's greatest seasons in 1934. He ran away with the Triple Crown while accumulating a .363 batting average, 49 home runs and 165 RBI. To commemorate Lou's superb season, Goudey not only honored the star twice in the company's 1934 set, but also used his image (along with the phrase, "Lou Gehrig Says") across the bottom of each item in the 72-card low-number series.
Although discussions regarding a player's "best cards" usually proceed in subjectively inspired deadlock, this is not the case with Gehrig: polls of enthusiasts are usually unanimous in recognizing Gehrig's 1934 Goudey portrait card as his finest. An absolute classic baseball card! Not only was the commemorative issued in a magical year by the preeminent manufacturer of gum cards, but it is an utterly gorgeous piece to behold. The offered example is thoroughly enviable, with an obverse image of Gehrig that's almost certainly as bright as the day it was printed. All four corners are square and pointed, and nominal downgrading appears to have been based primarily on a wisp of touching at the bottom-right aspect. Crisp and highly visual Near Mint to Mint condition.
