Club Atlético Peñarol are one of the dominant forces in Uruguayan soccer, winning 45 Primera Division titles, with that number climbing to 50 when the five titles from their predecessor team, Central Uruguay Railway Cricket Club, are included. Peñarol own five Copa Libertadores trophies, the third highest total in South America, and were named the South American Club of the 20th Century by the International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS).
Offered in this lot is a 1936 Primera Division de Uruguay medal from Peñarol’s 1936 title-winning campaign. Los Carboneros finished the 18-game season with 30 points, three more than archrivals and runners-up Nacional, while maintaining a league-best goal differential of +28. This was the second of four consecutive league titles for Peñarol. This 18k gold medal was presented to Alvaro Gestido, a member of the both the 1928 Olympic and 1930 World Cup Uruguay teams, and the brother of future Uruguayan president Oscar Diego Gestido.
This offered gold medal measures approximately 1.5 inches in length and .75 inches in width. One side features a high-relief etching a trophy with “CAP 1936” etched on the trophy. The reverse side is etched with “C.A. Peñarol / Alvaro Gestido / Campeon Copa / En Propiedad / 1A Division / 1936”. This thrilling medal is in good condition. This item comes with a LOA confirming it is part of the Rony Almeida Soccer Collection.
