The 1937 World Series was a rematch of the 1936 Fall Classic between bitter cross-town rivals the New York Giants and New York Yankees. This was the fifth meeting in the World Series between the two New York teams, with both teams winning two series’ apiece. The 1937 World Series featured numerous Hall of Famers on both teams with the Yankees being led by manager Joe McCarthy and players Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Bill Dickey, Lefty Gomez, Tony Lazzeri and Red Ruffing. The Giants countered with Hall of Famers Carl Hubbell, Travis Jackson, Mel Ott and Bill Terry. The Yankees won the series in five games.

After taking the first game 8-1 on October 6th, the Yankees sent out Red Ruffing to the mound. After giving up a first inning RBI single to Mel Ott, Ruffing settled down to scatter seven hits in the game and allowed that one run. The Yankees once again flexed their muscles, by pounding out 12 hits with DiMaggio, Dickey, George Selkirk, Lazzeri and Ruffing each collecting two hits apiece in the Yankees second consecutive 8-1 victory.

Offered here are the lineup cards from Game 2 of the 1937 World Series played on October 7th, 1937 at Yankee Stadium. Each card measures approximately 3 7/8 x 4 ½ inches. The Yankees card reads “OFFICIAL BATTING ORDER NEW YORK” on the top. Pre-printed numbers 1-9 have the last names and positions handwritten in pencil in order “Crosetti SS, Rolfe 3B, DiMaggio CF, Gehrig 1B, Dickey C, Hoag LF, Selkirk RF, Lazzeri 2B, Ruffing P”. “World Series 1937” is side written in darker pencil on the right side and “McCarthy” is handwritten in pencil on the Manager line. The back of the card has the “NEW YORK SPECIAL GROUND RULES” that include rules “Foul poles are on playing field” and “Ball sticking in or going through wire screen in front of bleachers: 2 Bases.” This card is in good condition with all of the names still clear. There is a single vertical fold crease down the center and some paper loss on the reverse side.

The second card presented is from the visiting New York Giants. The faded blue card has “ON ROAD” in the upper left corner with “OFFICIAL BATTING ORDER CLUB NEW YORK” and “DATE” with “Oct.7-37” handwritten in pencil. Like the Yankees card, the batting order and positions are handwritten in pre-printed 1-9 order that read “Moore LF, Bartell SS, Ott 3B, Ripple RF, McCarthy 1B, Chiozza CF, Mancuso C, Whitehead 2B, Melton P (Crossed out) Gumbert (right side), Leslie (below)”. “World Series 1937” is side written in darker pencil on the right side with a faded Bill Terry on the bottom right corner. The back of the card is blank and the condition of this card is good. There is paper loss on the reverse side, along with edge and corner wear. The names are clear, with the exception of Bill Terry’s, but is still readable. A terrific piece of baseball history.
