Presented here is a Type I photograph showing four of baseball’s greatest aces together at a 1939 Old Timers Day Game at Fenway Park. Smoky Joe Wood, Cy Young, Lefty Grove, and Walter Johnson are all enjoying the festivities, with Wood donning the uniform of the Yale baseball team he managed, Young wearing a special “Old Timers” jersey, Grove street clothes, and Johnson a sweater and Washington Senators Cap. Grove was the only active player when this photograph was taken, and was in the middle of a 15-4 All-Star season for the Red Sox. At the end of the year, Grove would be awarded his MLB-record ninth ERA title after this season, stupefying batters to the tune of a 2.54 ERA. This Old Timers game took place on July 12th, one day after the 1939 All-Star Game at Yankee Stadium, where Grove was an unused substitute. This photograph measures 7 x 9 ¼ inches, and has writing and stamping on the reverse consistent with other exemplars of Type I photographs. This photograph comes with a full LOA from PSA/DNA (1P07299), authenticating it as a Type I photograph.
