1928 Olympic gold medalist and 1930 FIFA World Cup champion Alvaro Gestido was presented with this silver medal upon the 50th anniversary of the Uruguayan club Peñarol in 1941. Gestido, the brother of a Uruguayan president, earned 26 caps for la celeste and started at left-half for Uruguay in the 1930 World Cup final against Argentina. This offered medal features a high relief etching of a locomotive and a man holding a flag on the front, honoring Peñarol’s roots as the Central Uruguay Railway Cricket Club (C.U.R.C.C.). Etched in high relief on the reverse side is “Cincuentenario Del Club A Peñarol (C.U.R.C.C.) 1891 28 IX 1941”. Also etched on the back of the medal is “A. Gestido”. This medal is in great condition!
