Offered in this lot is a ceramic Jules Rimet Trophy given to friends and family members of players on Uruguay’s 1950 World Cup team. The Uruguayans engineered a stunning upset over a favored Brazil team in the finals at Rio’s Estadio Maracana, with the slight winger Alcides Ghiggia scoring the game-winning goal against the selecao with only 10 minutes left in the game. Uruguay won 2-1 in the end, ending Brazil’s quest for their first FIFA World Cup title in humiliating fashion. This offered ceramic gift trophy depicts the Greek goddess of victory, Nike, perched on a similarly colored gold pedestal. The trophy displays some weathering due to age but is otherwise in excellent condition. This item comes with a letter of provenance from Marcel Alejandro Pesce Arremon who states in his letter that this trophy "was received by me from a family director of the Uruguayan delegation at the 1950 World Cup."
