Uruguayan winger Alcides Edgardo Ghiggia was the unlikely hero in the 1950 FIFA World Cup Final as an unheralded Uruguay squad defeated the heavily favored host nation Brazil 2-1 to win their second FIFA World Cup title. Ghiggia scored the game-winning goal in the 79th minute to stun Brazil in what is now recognized as one of the greatest upsets in the history of soccer. This award was presented to Ghiggia by the newspaper La Mañana in 1975 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Uruguay’s second FIFA World Cup title. Etched on this award is “La Manana / A Los Campeones del Mundo de 1950 / Alcides Ghiggia / 16-VII-50 Maracana 16-VII-75”. This award is in good condition.
