Uruguay’s captain Obdulio Varela was presented with this large, decorative trophy for winning the 1950 FIFA World Cup. Uruguay traveled to Brazil for their first World Cup since winning the inaugural event in 1950 determined to prove to quality of soccer from the River Plate. The Brazilian team were the prohibitive favorites, with their winner’s medals minted before the decisive final against Varela and la Celeste. It was the solid leadership and steady hand of Uruguay’s holding midfielder and talisman that allowed the underdogs to snatch a shocking victory away from Brazil as Uruguay triumphed 2-1 in the final at Maracanã Stadium. Today, the game is known as the “Maracanazo”, or “The Agony at Maracanã”, to commemorate the great pain felt by the entirety of the Brazilian nation.

This offered trophy is, in a word, gargantuan, measuring in at 16.5 inches tall with a 12-inch diameter. This trophy is silver in color, with ornamental gold decorations affixed to the trophy. Etched on the front of the trophy cup is “IV Campeonato Mundial de Futbol Final” and “Uruguai / Brasil”. Above the names of each country is a raised logo of their respective soccer association. Etched on the base of the trophy is “Taça Jules Rimet” and “Rio de Janeiro 1950”. Please note that the trophy has a small dent on the cup, although this dent is on the opposite side of the etchings and logos. This large-handled trophy is an incredible example of Uruguayan soccer history. It originates from the estate of Obdulio Varela. This item comes with a LOA confirming it is part of the Rony Almeida Soccer Collection.
