The Hall of Fame catcher Yogi Berra enjoyed one of the best seasons of his career in 1950, hitting .322 with 28 homers, 124 RBI, and 116 runs scored at the age of 25. Berra made his third of 18 career All-Star Games in 1950 while leading the Yankees to a 4-0 sweep of the “Whiz Kid” Philadelphia Phillies in the Fall Classic. Offered in this lot is Berra’s signed contract for the 1950 season, guaranteeing the St. Louis resident $17,500 for his skilled services as the Yankee catcher. A “special covenant” included in this contract reads “said player to receive an additional sum of One Thousand Five Hundred Dollars ($1500.00) to be paid at the end of the 1950 season if Manager Stengel so approves.” Berra has signed this contract in black pen as “Lawrence P. Berra”, inscribing his address of “5447 Elizabeth Ave, St. Louis Mo.” below his signature. This contract has also been signed by George Weiss and William Harridge. The contract is dated to the 14th of March, 1950. It is accompanied by a LOA from JSA (BB12016).
