Winter Auction 2018 Ending February 17
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/18/2018
Each card has been graded by PSA. Offered is an 8-card near set (missing Feller and Rizzuto for completion) of Wheaties Premium Photo baseball cards issued in 1951. For years, collectors considered this set complete at eight cards. However, a Phil Rizzuto example surfaced in recent years making the release complete at nine cards. Produced on glossy photographic paper, these eight 5" x 7" cards were produced by General Mills as a "test issue" to determine the popularity of such a set with the public. After a very brief test period, the cards were pulled due to contract issues with two of the players—Mantle and Rosen. Being a 1951 product, the card of Mickey Mantle is particularly noteworthy as it could be considered a "rookie" card of Mantle. Instead of numbers, the subjects are assigned a "product" code (A8491) plus a letter. When one compares the smaller 1952 Wheaties cards to these, it's obvious that these finely produced portraits were the inspiration for the subsequent illustrations. Includes: Graded PSA EX 5: 5 cards w/Richie Ashburn (C), Yogi Berra (F), Roy Campenalla (K), Bob Lemon (J) and Al Rosen (E); PSA VG-EX 4: 2 cards w/Mickey Mantle (G) and Stan Musial (A).
