Graded EX 5 (MC) by PSA. Hall of Famer. Although technically a "Short Print" entry, that term doesn't do justice to the excitement that ensues whenever this depiction of the Red Sox icon appears: the '54 Bowman Ted Williams card is widely known throughout the industry for its great rarity. In 1954, Topps held a contract with Ted Williams that entitled the Brooklyn-based confectioner to use Ted's likeness on both the first and last cards in its own 250-card production. Apparently, shortly after the year began, Topps discovered the need to have its attorneys gently remind Bowman about Ted Williams' contractual obligations. Soon thereafter, young collectors buying packs in the attempt to complete a '54 Bowman set were obliged to settle for a second Jimmy Piersall card – he already appeared on #210 – to fill the #66 slot. (Then, as now, this wasn't a very enticing option.) The example seen here carries a gratifying aesthetic that would be welcomed through a wide range of the hobby's presently Williams-less 1954 Bowman sets. Aligned toward the top edge (with a trace of white border at that aspect still discernible), its illustration is clean and alluring. Gentle handling in the card's past is reflected in very slight, uniform corner wear. An always challenging and deservedly popular gum card, in solid Excellent condition (qualified as noted).
