Before Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb was the undisputed greatest player in baseball history. A fearsome competitor with an indomitable will, Cobb was far and away the most dominant player in the fledgling American League. Cobb, who has the highest career batting average of any player, was the first man to reach the 4,000-hit plateau. A Detroit Tiger for all but two of his 24 MLB seasons, Cobb was a member of the inaugural class of the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1936.
Fast forward several decades and along comes Pete Rose, who played with the same tenacity and desire to win, earning the nickname “Charlie Hustle”. Rose would ultimately break Cobb’s hit record with 4,256 hits.
Offered here is a 1954 check that was originally signed by Ty Cobb and later signed by Pete Rose. Drawn from the “First National Bank of Nevada”, Cobb signed this “8/8” 19 “54” dated check. Cobb signed his name “Tyrus R. Cobb” in blue pen for “5.00” and made out to “Dr. W.W. Catherech (sic.)”. Rose signed his name in blue pen on the lower front left corner and inscribed “#4526”. The back of the check has bank stampings and the check also has the punched holes indicating that the check cleared. The check measures 3 x 8 inches and is a tremendous item that has the signatures of the top two hitters in baseball history and has been encapsulated by PSA/DNA (84109545) and has been graded AUTHENTIC.
