Although Ty Cobb played baseball in an era where many players worked second jobs, Cobb amassed a considerable fortune in his later years through shrewd investing and intelligent business deals. His fortune grew so great that, in his later life, he donated $100,000 to build a hospital in Georgia. The career .366 hitter has a complex legacy, but his generous actions had a lasting impact after his death in 1961.
This check, dated to April 29th, 1955, is made out for the value of $5.06. It is made out to “Cal’s Gas & Plumbing Supplies. Cobb signed the bottom of the First National Bank of Nevada check as “Tyrus R. Cobb” in green pen. This check has been encapsulated and graded a MINT 9 by PSA/DNA (83963249).
