From an early age, Ron Santo was around professional baseball. As a kid back in Seattle, Santo was the minor league Seattle Rainiers’ batboy, then the team’s clubhouse attendant as a teenager. Santo also made himself into a three-sport star in high school, despite battling diabetes, a condition he kept secret until 1971. Santo was signed by the Cubs in 1959 and made his big league debut a year later. From 1960 to 1973, Santo manned third base for the North Siders, becoming, along with teammate and friend Ernie Banks, the face of the Chicago Cubs franchise.

The unbridled enthusiasm and talent shown by the two men made them the most popular players to ever play in Wrigley Field, and the only bright spots in an otherwise disappointing period in Cubs history. By the mid-1960s Santo was renowned for his superior batting eye, leading the NL in walks from 1966 to 1968 and on-base percentage in 1966.

This bat dates to the 1965-1968 seasons, summers in which Santo batted .286 and his work at the hot corner won him the Gold Glove Award every year. Santo’s 1965-68 Hillerich & Bradsby S2 model bat is un-cracked and shows heavy use. Very light checking from repeated ball contact is found on the back barrel and many ball marks with stitch impressions can be found on all sides of the bat. Cleat marks are visible on the right and back barrel along with green bat rack paint streaks. The handle has been scored to enhance the grip and the model number “S2” is stamped into the knob. Additionally, the bat’s weight “31” is written on the knob along with Santos’ number “10” in faded black marker. The ash has taken on a golden-brown tone from age, giving this Santo gamer real visual beauty. The bat comes with a LOA from PSA/DNA (1B03520) for the game use and has been graded a near-perfect GU 9.5.
