On June 9th, 1967 a young prospect named Reggie Jackson made his Major League debut with the Kansas City A’s. The future Hall of Famer would appear in 26 games from his June 9th debut to July 2nd, when he was sent back to the minors. Jackson would be recalled again to the big squad on September 15th of 1967 and hit the first of his 563 home runs during the September 17th game against the California Angels at Anaheim Stadium. Jackson’s home run came off of Jim Weaver in the top of the second inning to put the A’s on top 1-0.

Presented here is the very yellow sleeveless flannel A’s jersey Jackson wore when he connected on his first career home run during the September 17th, 1967 road game against the Angels. This jersey can be attributed to Jackson’s first home run in that this jersey was originally worn by Roger Repoz, who at 6’3” was a similar size to Jackson and was wearing No. 9 when Jackson made his first appearance with the A’s in June. As was customary during that era, teams would often recycle jerseys and Jackson was assigned and wore the number 31 during his first stint with the club with Repoz occupying the number 9. Repoz was traded to the Angels on June 15th, a little less than a week after Jackson’s first callup and upon Jackson’s return in September, he switched to the number “9” as no one else wore that number other than Jackson and Repoz during the 1967 season.

While it’s often thought that Jackson only wore “31” during his debut season of 1967, images and official scorecards show that Jackson indeed switch to the No. 9 in September of 1967. An official 1967 Kansas City Athletics scorebook is included with this jersey having Jackson’s number “9” printed on the roster. This button-down jersey was made by Wilson and is a size 42. The front has an “A” sewn on the upper left chest in green and white tackle twill with the number “9” sewn on a little lower and on the right side in the same green and white tackle twill. The Wilson 42 tag, along with a yellow patch with “67-1” in green is sewn on the front left tail. The back of the jersey has Jackson’s number “9” sewn on in McAuliffe-style font green and white tackle twill. The sleeve ends and collar have green/green/white soutache piping. This jersey displays heavy game use with wear on the piping and broken stitching on the “9” on the back. Jackson has added to this truly historical jersey by signing his name on the inside back collar with his customary “44” inscriptions inside the “J”. A complete gamer tied to the first of his 563 home runs and this comes with a LOA from MEARS (317805) for the game use and has been given a very high grade of A9 (only deduction for the worn piping and loose stitching on the reverse “9”). This Cooperstown-worthy jersey also comes with a handwritten note from Jackson saying he wore this jersey and a LOA from Beckett Authentication for Jackson’s signature.
