Niagara Purple Eagles dynamic point guard Calvin Murphy was presented with this 1967-68 Coach & Athlete Magazine Player of the Year award after an outstanding sophomore campaign with the independent school. Murphy, who sat out the 1966-67 campaign due to the NCAA’s restriction on freshman playing varsity, averaged an outstanding 38.2 points per game for James Maloney’s men. Niagara scored 87.7 points per game in 1967-68, the 14th highest mark in the country, largely due to the heroics of the 5’9” Murphy. Murphy played three seasons for Niagara, averaging 33.1 points per game, before embarking on a 13-season career with the San Diego/Houston Rockets culminating in Murphy’s induction to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1993.
This offered plaque is printed with “Coach & Athlete Magazine Award / This certifies that / Calvin Murphy / Niagara University / has been named / Player of the Year in Basketball, 1968 / For The East” and “Presented this 1st day of May 1968”.
