Guided by legendary manager Billy Martin, the New York Yankees won 97 games during the 1976 season, claiming the AL East title. Thurman Munson was the team leader and he put up a big season, hitting .302 with 105 runs batted in. Graig Nettles hit 32 home runs, Mickey Rivers batted .312 with 43 stolen bases, and Roy White scored 104 runs. On the mound, Ed Figueroa won 19 games with a 3.02 ERA. Catfish Hunter and Dock Ellis each added 17 wins. New York defeated the Kansas City Royals 3-2 to win the American League Championship Series before falling to the Cincinnati Reds in the World Series.
