The 1977 New York Yankees, guided by fiery manager Billy Martin, added another chapter to the franchise’s legacy. They finished the regular season with a record of 100-62, a season that culminated in a World Series victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers in six games, the 21st title in team history. The World Series victory was the first title in 15 years for the storied franchise and first under George Steinbrenner. The Yanks were absolutely overflowing with talent, with sluggers Reggie Jackson (32 home runs and 110 RBIs) and Craig Nettles (37 homers, 107 RBIs) providing the big blasts. Thurman Munson (who also knocked in 100 runs, while batting .308), Mickey Rivers (.326 batting average to go along with 22 steals) and Lou Piniella (who hit .330) all contributed to the team’s deadly lineup. On the mound, six different Yankees pitchers won at least 10 games, including ace Ron Guidry (16-7 record with a 2.82 ERA).

Included in that lineup during the regular season, was 29-year-old Carlos May, who played in 65 games for the Yankees in 1977, where he had 203 plate appearances and a .227 batting average. May was dealt to the California Angels in mid-season, but was still presented with a World Series Championship ring, which features the famed NY logo and is comprised of 19 beautiful round diamonds. Surrounding the face of the ring read the words “YANKEES WORLD CHAMPIONS” in relief work. On the left side of the band is the year 1977 atop the words “PRIDE” and “TRADITION” in banners, flying above the World Series trophy. The right shank features May’s name above a wonderful rendering of the Yankees logo in relief, with the words “21st World Championship” below. The inside of the band is marked BALFOUR (the manufacturer of the ring) along with 14K (the weight of the gold). The size of the ring is approximately 13 ½ with the approximate weight being 39.5 grams. This championship ring comes with a LOA from Carlos May.
