Out of all the scholarships thrust at the teenage phenomenon, Michael Jordan chose North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Guided by coach Dean Smith, Jordan was named ACC Freshman of the Year after averaging 13.4 points a game and scoring the winning jump shot to defeat Georgetown in the 1982 NCAA Championship Game.

It goes without saying that the budding superstar was awarded his university’s “letter” for his contribution on the court. This time-honored collegiate achievement was documented by this very certificate, signed among others by coach Dean Smith. Awarded in 1982, this may be the very first recognition Michael Jordan received as a college athlete. The 7 x 10 inch off-white certificate has “The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Athletic Association” with the “NC” logo printed at the top in old English type. Below “This is to certify that Michael Jordan is entitled to wear the NC monogram for his excellent and faithful work on the Basketball Team 1981-1982”. The certificate is signed by coach Dean Smith (blue ballpoint), Monogram Club President C.D. Mork (black ballpoint), Chairman Benson R. Wilcox (black felt tip) and John D. Swofford, Director of Athletics (black felt tip). The certificate shows edge wear and toning and there is light staining found around “Carolina” at top and several stray smudges and scuffs from age. This very important piece of Michael Jordan’s formative years comes with a letter of authenticity from PSA/DNA (AA07799).
