Former New York Yankees first baseman Don Mattingly is one of the most beloved Yankees in the storied history of the franchise. Mattingly was the face of the franchise following the World Series runs of the late 1970s, making his debut with the club in 1982 and playing in his first full season in 1983 after his callup from the minors in June of that season. Mattingly would finish the 1983 season with a solid .283 and quickly became more reliable in the field and at the plate then Steve Balboni, who was eventually traded to the Kansas City Royals in 1984.

When Mattingly arrived in the Bronx for good in 1983, he wore the number 46 before switching to his now famed number 23. This offered New York Yankees road jersey was worn by Mattingly during his rookie season of 1983 and features Donnie Baseball’s number “46” sewn on the back in navy and white tackle twill. This size 42 button-down jersey was manufactured by Wilson and features “NEW YORK” arched across the front in block-lettered navy and white tackle twill. The inner placket is lined with a soft white material for player comfort and the inside back collar has a gray team patch that has “Mattingly 83 1” embroidered in navy. The Wilson size 42 tag is sewn on the front left tail. The sleeve ends have a navy/white/navy striping pattern made of an expandable material.

This jersey displays excellent game use with evidence of showing that this has been worn and washed multiple times. This jersey is original with no alterations having been pulled from circulation and avoiding a second life in the minor leagues, which was a common occurrence for jerseys in that era. Mattingly has signed this jersey twice, once in black marker above the “YORK” on the front and in bolder blue marker below the “YORK” where he also inscribed “46”. This jersey comes with a LOA from noted baseball game used jersey expert William Henderson for the game use and a LOA from JSA (BB78030) for Mattingly’s signatures.
