One of the most significant acquisitions in the history of the New York Mets, the arrival of perennial All-Star catcher Gary Carter in a trade with the Montreal Expos in 1985 turned the Mets into instant contenders in the National League East. Teaming with first baseman Keith Hernandez and a star-studded pitching staff including, Dwight Gooden, Ron Darling and Bob Ojeda, Carter’s impact was swift and profound manifesting in the team’s dramatic seven-game World Series victory over the Boston Red Sox in 1986. It was Carter’s two-out single in the bottom of the 10th inning of Game Six that ignited the most memorable come from behind rally in World Series history. As a member of the championship team, Carter was presented with this 12” tall, scale-model replica of the Commissioner’s [World Series] Trophy created by the Balfour sports industry jewelers. The classic design features 28 gold colored pennants labeled with the names of every Major League team circling a golden crown on top of a golden band with a silver baseball set at the base of the ring’s interior. New York Mets and Atlanta Boston Red Sox press pins are mounted on smaller golden flag poles in front of the crowned band. “World Series Champions New York Mets 1986 Gary Carter” is printed on a gold band circling the 23” diameter black wooden base. One of two 1986 W.S. trophies presented to Carter, a Balfour manufacturer’s sticker is on the underside of the base. This trophy comes with a Letter from Mr. Carter attesting to the authenticity of it.
