With seven no-hitters spread across a career that spanned four decades, Nolan Ryan has gone down as one of the greatest pitchers to ever take the field. Originally a star with the New York Mets and California Angels, Ryan went home to Texas in 1980 and led his home-state Houston Astros to their first three division championships in franchise history.
In 1986 the veteran southpaw's 12 wins helped lead Houston to a dramatic post season playoff appearance against the Mets. Ryan pitched a gem in Game 5 at Shea Stadium, giving up just two hits and striking out 12 through 9 nail-biting innings. Ryan left the game without registering a win and the Astros lost in 12 innings, but his valiant effort will be remembered as one of his finest games.
