The Nike Air Jordan III sneaker was released during the 1987-88 NBA season, colliding with Jordan’s days as the NBA’s most explosive scorer. Jordan averaged an incredible 35 points per game in 1987-88, with the now-iconic Jordan III sneakers appearing on Mike’s cover photograph of the May 16th, 1988 Sports Illustrated magazine. The Bulls won 50 games in 1987-88, then the highest number of victories in Jordan’s young career. Jordan won both the scoring title and his first NBA MVP trophy in 1987-88, while also claiming the NBA Defensive Player of the Year award after leading the league in steals, with 3.2 per game.

Jordan became the undisputed king of the NBA in the late 1980’s, winning seven consecutive scoring titles after coming back from a fractured foot suffered during his second NBA season. Offered in this lot is the embodiment of Jordan’s dominance, in the form of a pair of Nike Air Jordan III sneakers worn by “His Airness”. The sneakers are primarily white, with elephant skin-patterned accents on the midsole and heels. A black Nike Air logo is applied to both heels. Red Jumpman logos are embroidered on the tongues. The soles are gray, white, and red, with “NIKE” applied to both soles in red lettering. Jordan has signed the right shoe in black marker. The shoes come with a LOA from MEARS for the game use and a LOA from Beckett Authentication Services for Jordan’s signature.
