Offered is a 1988 Charles Richard Drew Trophy for NCAA Coach of the Year presented to Lou Holtz. The gold metal trophy includes a 5 1/4-inch tall figure of a coach at the top of a 9-inch tall loving cup, which is mounted on a 5 x 5 x 4 1/2-inch brown and black wood base. The front of the base features a black metal plaque with gold accents, with the caption "The Charles Richard Drew Trophy The N.C.A.A. Coach of the Year Lou Holtz Notre Dame University By: The Pigskin Club of Washington, D.C. 1988" engraved in gold letters. In his third season helming the Fighting Irish, Holtz finished the season 12-0, winning the national championship. The Fighting Irish won the title by defeating the previously unbeaten and No. 3 ranked West Virginia Mountaineers in the Sunkist Fiesta Bowl in Tempe, Arizona, 34–21. The 1988 squad, one of 11 national title squads for the Irish, is considered to be one of the best undefeated teams in the history of college football. That team is best remembered for its 31-30 upset of No. 1 ranked Miami, ending their 36-game regular season winning streak. This comes with a LOA from Lou Holtz and 100% of the net proceeds from the sale of this item will benefit the Holtz Charitable Foundation, Inc.
