Offered is a 1988 Lou Holtz Timmie Award for College Coach of the Year presented by the Touchdown Club of Washington D.C. The 7 x 16-inch trophy features a pewter figure of a boy playing football in vintage early football garb atop a 7 1/2 x 7 1/2 x 6 1/4-inch black wood base. A football-shaped pewter logo of the "Touchdown Club Washington, D.C." is at the top front of the base, above a silver metal plaque engraved in black with the caption "The Timmie Award to the College Coach of the Year 1988". Below that plaque is a silver metal plaque engraved in black with the legend "Lou Holtz". The underside of the base has a "Balfour" logo plaque in gold and black. Holtz received the award for his achievements in coaching the 1988 University of Notre Dame football team. The Irish ended the season with 12 wins and no losses, winning the national championship. The Fighting Irish won the title by defeating the previously unbeaten and No. 3 ranked West Virginia Mountaineers in the Sunkist Fiesta Bowl in Tempe, Arizona, by a score of a 34–21. The 1988 squad, one of 11 national title squads for the Irish, is considered to be one of the best undefeated teams in the history of college football. Holtz's team beat the teams which finished the season ranked #2, #4, #5, and #7 in the AP Poll. The 1988 squad is best remembered for its 31-30 upset of No. 1 ranked Miami, ending their 36-game regular season winning streak. This comes with a LOA from Lou Holtz and 100% of the net proceeds from the sale of this item will benefit the Holtz Charitable Foundation, Inc.
