Throughout much of the 20th and 21st centuries, Bill Bertka has served as a scout, coach, or general guru for the Los Angeles Lakers. Bertka, born in 1927, has coached Lakers stars from Wilt Chamberlain and Happy Hairston to D’Angelo Russell and Kyle Kuzma. The Lakers hired Bertka on the recommendation of star forward “Hot Rod” Hundley in 1968, and excluding a stint in the Jazz front office, Bertka has faithfully served the Lakers ever since. Offered here is Bertka’s personally owned Los Angeles Lakers playbook for the 1988-89 season given to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. The first page of this playbook is a handwritten note from Bertka to Abdul-Jabbar, with the experienced Bertka writing “Whatever your [sic] looking for – I have it – Best of Luck”. This playbook also contains plays from Del Harris’ 1995-96 Lakers team. It is in good condition, and features “Bill Bertka” and Lakers stickers on the front cover. This item comes with a LOA signed by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
