Hall of Fame center Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was presented with this County of Los Angeles plaque in 1989 in commemoration of his service to the Los Angeles Lakers throughout the 1970’s and 1980’s. Abdul-Jabbar joined the Lakers from the Milwaukee Bucks in 1975 and played the next 14 seasons for the Lakers, winning five NBA titles and three MVP trophies while a member of the Lakers.
This plaque was awarded to Abdul-Jabbar on June 14th, 1989, the day after Abdul-Jabbar’s final game of his career against the Detroit Pistons in the NBA Finals. The plaque features a large County of Los Angeles crest above a placard that reads “Kareem Abdul-Jabbar / Captain, Los Angeles Lakers / A man for all seasons, winning is the name of his game. / In 20 record setting NBA seasons, Kareem played on 5 / championship teams, in 19 All-Star Games and scored more / points than any other player in history. He did it his way. / Los Angeles County loves Kareem, and we thank him for 2 / decades of thrilling skyhooks and championships.” The names of several Los Angeles County politicians and the date “June 14, 1989” are also etched on this placard. This award measures 14 x 17 inches. It is accompanied by a LOA signed by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar himself.
