The Hall of Fame center Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was presented with this award for Outstanding Community Service by the State of New Jersey Department of Community Affairs during his 1989 NBA farewell tour. Abdul-Jabbar was nearly a Net to begin his career, having been drafted by the then-ABA franchise first overall in the 1969 ABA Draft, however the UCLA product signed with the Milwaukee Bucks of the NBA instead. This trophy takes the shape of a large gold basketball atop a wooden pedestal. It measures just under 20 inches tall, with the base measuring 8.75 x 8.75 inches. A placard on the front of the pedestal reads “Presented to Kareem Abdul Jabbar For Outstanding Community Service” and “Commissioner Anthony M. Villane, Jr., D.D.S. New Jersey Governor’s Council On Physical Fitness and Sports”. Four gold supports connect the basketball to the pedestal, however one of these supports has become unmoored from the basketball. This trophy comes with a LOA signed by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
