There would be no Cal Ripken Jr. or even Billy Ripken without Cal Ripken Sr. and when Cal and Billy refer to teaching baseball “The Ripken Way,” they’re talking about the lessons passed along to them by their father, a lifelong baseball man and member of the Baltimore Orioles organization for more than three decades. Ripken Sr. served as minor league manager throughout the 1960s and was a coach for the major league squad from 1976-1986, before taking over as manager in 1987 and 1988 and continued as a coach again from 1989-1992. He wore this size-40 white home jersey with the Orioles cursive logo stitched in orange and black tackle twill across the front above his number 7 during the 1989 season. The jersey was obtained from the Babe Ruth Birthplace Museum where it was on display and loaned from a personal collector. Ripken’s name is stitched across the back on a white name plate and the Rawlings manufacturer’s label, with “Set 1, 1989” tag is stitched inside the left front tail. The jersey comes with a Jay’s Sports Connection COA and an LOA from noted sports jersey expert Dave Miedema.
