In 1991, the United States Women’s Soccer Team decisively won the inaugural FIFA Women’s World Cup behind a fearsome attack, dubbed the “triple-edged sword” by the local Chinese media, spearheaded by the talismanic number 10 and Golden Boot-winner Michelle Akers. Akers, the scorer of the first ever goal in United States history, bagged an outstanding 10 goals during the Guangdong-based tournament as the Stars and Stripes finished undefeated and untied. Akers lashed five goals past an overmatched Chinese Taipei team in a 7-0 quarterfinals victory and claimed both United States goals in their historic 2-1 victory over Norway in the tournament final.

Akers, who scored 107 goals in 155 United States caps, was named the Silver Ball and Golden Boot winner of the tournament, with USA left winger Carin Jennings claiming the Golden Ball after a sublime tournament. Akers would transition from striker to midfielder after this tournament, leading the United States to a second World Cup victory in 1999 against a classy China squad. In 2000, Akers and China’s Sun Wen were named the co-FIFA Woman Player of the Century.

Offered in this lot is Michelle Akers 1991 FIFA Women’s World Cup gold medal. A portion of the proceeds shall benefit the Michelle Akers Horse Rescue and Outreach Inc.
