Playing in the center of one of the best front-three’s in soccer history, the talismanic number 10 and FIFA Player of the Century Michelle Akers paced the Stars and Stripes with 10 crucial goals on their way to the inaugural 1991 FIFA Women’s World Cup title. Akers, the scorer of the first goal in United States Women’s Soccer history, grabbed a pair of goals in the Group Stage against Brazil and Japan before putting Chinese Taipei to the sword with five goals, including four in the first half, in the United States’ commanding 7-0 Round of 16 victory.

Akers started the final match of the tournament, against perennial foes Norway, as the center forward between April Heinrichs and her fellow centurion Carin Jennings. As the team’s longest-tenured player and emotional leader, Akers was handed the responsibility of leading the United States to victory, and like so many other times in her career the former University of Central Florida All-American delivered in spades. Akers opened the scoring in the 20th minute of the 80-minute match, grabbing her ninth goal of the tournament, before Norway equalized in later in the first half. In the 78th minute of play with the score still tied, Akers exerted considerable pressure on the overmatched Norweigan defender Tina Svensson to force an errant backpass to goalkeeper Reidun Seth, who could do nothing but watch as Akers elegantly breezed past the shot-stopper and slotted home the winner. With an economical tap-in, Akers laid the foundation for the United States’ era of excellence that has continued, unabated, through the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup title.

Offered in this lot is the stunning Golden Boot award presented to Michelle Akers by FIFA as the top scorer of the inaugural FIFA Women’s World Cup. This gold-plated Adidas boot is 10 inches long and is a right shoe, with the trademark three black Adidas stripes located on each side. Six studs and the Adidas logo are present on the bottom of the cleat. This trophy is the first ever awarded in the history of the FIFA Women’s World Cup, and it is accompanied by a LOA from Michelle Akers herself. A portion of the proceeds shall benefit the Michelle Akers Horse Rescue and Outreach Inc.
