Michael Jordan surprised the sports world by announcing his retirement from the NBA prior to the start of the 1993-94 season. Though he led his Chicago Bulls to the first of their “3-Peat” championships, Jordan expressed a lack of desire to play basketball and the tragic murder of his father as the reasons behind his surprise decision. Jordan then embarked on a new career – baseball. In February of 1994, Jordan signed a minor league contract with the Chicago White Sox and reported to spring training in Florida. Jordan was assigned to the AA Birmingham Barons, where he finished the season with a .202 average, three home runs and 51 RBI.
