United States midfielder Michelle Akers celebrated the United States Women’s National Soccer Team’s victory following the gold medal winning game at the 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympics with this offered American flag as it was thrown to her prior to heading back to the locker room. The United States defeated a strong China team 2-1 in the gold medal match at Sanford Stadium in Athens, Georgia, getting goals from Shannon MacMillan and Tiffeny Milbrett to win gold at the inaugural Olympic women’s soccer competition. Akers scored a key goal in the semifinals that enabled the United States to defeat Norway 2-1 and advance to the gold medal match.
This offered American flag measures 4 x 6 feet. Seven red stripes and six white stripes are present on this flag, which features a blue rectangle containing 50 white stars. This offered flag comes from the personal memorabilia collection of Michelle Akers, who has provided a LOA. A portion of the proceeds shall benefit the Michelle Akers Horse Rescue & Outreach Inc.
