Michelle Akers scored her 100th goal for the United States in a 6-0 victory over Portugal at the end of a two-game series against the Iberian squad in January of 1999. The historic goal came in the 40th minute, as Akers lashed a Tiffeny Millbrett corner kick into the net off the volley with her left foot. This made Akers the second player in USWNT history to reach the 100-goal mark and only the fourth player in history to reach the century plateau. The series against Portugal was a tune up for the upcoming 1999 World Cup, which the United States won in a tense penalty shootout against China in the Rose Bowl.
Offered in this lot is the ball struck by Akers for her 100th international goal against Portugal. This size “5” ball has been signed by many of Akers teammates from the day, including Akers, Mia Hamm, Brandi Chastain, Carla Overbeck, Lorrie Fair, Tracy Ducar, Kate Sobrero, Shannon MacMillan, Tiffany Roberts, Cindy Parlow, Kristine Lilly, Joy Fawcett, Tisha Venturini, Tiffeny Milbrett, head coach Tony DiCicco, and several others. The signatures have been written in black marker on this white ball. The ball features a pair of blue and red Nike swooshes and a pair of USA soccer logos. This historic soccer ball comes with a LOA signed by Michelle Akers herself and a LOA from Steve Grad of Beckett Authentication Services. A portion of the proceeds shall benefit the Michelle Akers Horse Rescue & Outreach Inc.
