During the last decade of the 20th century, Seattle’s Edgar Martinez made himself into the game’s first great designated hitter. The 2-time AL batting champ won 5 Silver Slugger Awards, the last coming in 2003 when he hit .294 despite being sidelined the last half of the season by a broken toe. Martinez was hitting above the .300 mark midseason when he made the last of his 7 All-Star Game appearances.
