Presented is an original painting by artist Greg Gutierrez of Baseball Hall of Famer Jackie Robinson. The pointillist-style painting portrays Robinson, wearing his #42 Brooklyn Dodgers uniform, from the back running the basses at Ebbets Field. His figure is poised in front of a large crowd of people in the stands, with the banner “Brooklyn” in the upper left corner. The 2019 original by Gutierrez is entitled “42” and is mixed media on an 18 x 24-inch white canvas stretched over a wood frame. The artist has signed his name in yellow paint in the lower right corner of the painting and inscribed “19” below his signature. Gutierrez is an artist and writer based in San Diego. Robinson was the first African American to play in Major League Baseball in the modern era. He broke the baseball color line when he started at first base for the Brooklyn Dodgers on April 15, 1947. During his 10-year MLB career, Robinson won the inaugural Rookie of the Year Award in 1947, was an All-Star for six consecutive seasons from 1949 through 1954 and won the National League Most Valuable Player Award in 1949—the first black player so honored. Robinson played in six World Series and contributed to the Dodgers' 1955 World Series championship. Robinson was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1962.
