Barry Bonds began the 2007 season with 734 career home runs, and throughout the season he assiduously pursued the lofty mark of 755 home runs set by the inimitable Hank Aaron. His pursuit of the record seemed preordained, and despite opposing pitcher’s walking Bonds more than any other batter in baseball during the 2007 season his home run pace never dipped. In late July however, after hitting home runs 752 and 753 against the Chicago Cubs, Bonds stuttered slightly, going a full week between homers until a matchup against the Florida Marlins at AT&T Park on July 27th, 2007.

Bonds came to bat in the first inning against the Dutch hurler Rick Vanden Hurk, making just his ninth career start against the pound-for-pound greatest hitter of all-time. With Bonds ahead in the count 2-1, Vanden Hurk sent the former Arizona State standout a gift-wrapped changeup at the belt that Bonds crushed over 420 feet to left-center field. With one swing of the bat, Bonds put himself within one home run of tying the MLB record. Bonds tied Aaron a week later in San Diego, and three days after that hit number 756 at home against the Washington Nationals.
