Philadelphia Athletics and Chicago White Sox second baseman Eddie Collins was one of the best players in baseball for much of the first third of the 20th century. A slick hitting infielder with exceptional speed, Collins was the backbone of the Philadelphia A’s “$100,000 Infield”. The Millerton, New York native led the A’s to three World Series titles in the early 20th century, hitting .429, .286, and .421 in the A’s three Fall Classic wins. Over the course of his 25-season career, Collins maintained a sparkling .333 batting average and collected 3,315 hits. Not included in Collins’ career hit totals are his 512 sacrifice hits, the most in MLB history by more than 100 sacrifices.

During his career, the Columbia-educated Collins was regarded alongside Christy Mathewson as one of the most upstanding and intelligent members of the baseball community. Collins parlayed his affability and intellect into a lengthy career as the Boston Red Sox general manager, presiding over the team’s front office when they signed Ted Williams, Bobby Doerr, and numerous other legends. Collins retired from playing in 1930 and was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1939.

This Stall & Dean glove was worn by the right-handed Collins during his career, which began with a six-game cup-of-coffee at the end of the 1906 season and dates between 1906 through 1920. The glove, which fit over Collins’ left hand, has a small Stall & Dean tag sewn on the top of the middle finger slot. A rudimentary basket is constructed of a piece of leather sewn between the index finger and thumb. The wrist strap is affixed with a small button and the glove displays outstanding use. This is an unimpeachable relic from the dead ball era and would make a crowning centerpiece in any vintage baseball collection. This glove is accompanied by a LOA from MEARS as well as a Letter of Provenance from Eddie Collins Jr.
