If you lined up 10 random men and was asked to pick out the one who hit 56 home runs and set the record for RBI in a single season, Hack Wilson would be the last one you’d put the finger on. Wilson was a stout 5’ 6” with hands so small that he had to use specially made bats with dinner handles, and built like a beer keg perched on tooth picks shod in size 5 cleats.

Regardless of how he appeared, for a few precious seasons Hack Wilson was the National League’s answer to Babe Ruth. The ebullient slugger embodied everything decadent about 1920’s Chicago, and his nightlife antics made him as much of a star as his on-field heroics did. After leading his Chicago Cubs to the NL Pennant in 1929, Wilson followed that year up with one of the most incredible seasons ever recorded in modern times: 191 RBI (still the record), .356 average, 56 home runs, .454 on-base-percentage and .723 slugging percentage. The Baseball Writers of America voted Wilson the “Most Useful Player” in the National League (now known as the MVP Award).

Because of Hack’s quick rise and even quicker fall, any game used pieces are extremely sought after. However, this uniform is a real find. The reason is that this combination jersey and pants date to the year of Wilson’s incredible MVP season of 1930. This off-white, partially button-down Spalding flannel jersey has three buttons from the neck down and navy blue piping around the collar and around the buttons. A red wishbone “C” with a navy blue cub sitting holding a bat logo is on the upper left chest. The sleeves have two thin navy blue piping stripes at the sleeve-ends. There are air holes in the armpits. There is no number on the back of the jersey and embroidered in black on the bottom outside back tail is “Wilson 3 30”. There is some fraying on the piping on the back of the neck. The jersey displays moderate wear with some marks and sweat stains present. This jersey comes with a LOA from Mears, who have graded this jersey an A9.

The flannel pants are also an off-white color with one navy blue piping stripe down each side of the legs. The pants have been cut and tailored to knee-high length with an elastic band at the knees. The waist has built-in belt holders and the front has a clip on waist with three buttons. Embroidered in black along the buttons is “Wilson 3 30”. The back of the pants have two pockets on each side. These pants display excellent use with some stains and marks throughout. This historic uniform, from arguably the greatest individual season of all-time. Mears have deemed these pants authentic. This item represents the best possible item from one of the most difficult Hall of Famers to obtain game used merchandise from, and in his and possibly baseball's greatest offensive season.
