Offered in this lot is a stunning glass plate negative of Pittsburgh Pirates star shortstop Honus Wagner taken by George Grantham Bain. This negative is dated to March 17th of 1913, shortly before Wagner’s 17th season in the Major Leagues. This image is one of the most famous images of Wagner, who, in his age-39 season, hit a tidy .300 with three homers, 56 RBI, and 21 stolen bases for the 78-71 Pirates. This glass plate negative shows Wagner in his Pirates uniform, choking way up on a sturdy piece of lumber. The negative measures 7 x 5 inches and features “[Kabel Photo] Wagner-Pitt” printed on the top border. “S.S. 3-17-13” is printed on the reverse side. This is a terrific collector’s item from the career of baseball’s greatest dead ball era star. Please note that this lot only includes the glass plate negative and the envelope it is stored in.
