After suffering a pair of ocular injuries early in his basketball career – once in 1968 against the University of California-Berkeley while playing for UCLA and a second time in 1974 while with the Bucks – the Hall of Fame center Kareem Abdul-Jabbar began wearing his iconic plastic goggles. These goggles became an iconic piece of Abdul-Jabbar’s legacy, with the NBA’s all-time leading scorer’s character in the hit comedy film Airplane! (1980), the pilot Roger Murdoch, evacuated from the cockpit in his Lakers shorts, sneakers, and trademark goggles.
Offered here is a pair of game-used goggles originating from the personal collection of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Abdul-Jabbar played professionally from 1969 to 1989, scoring 38,387 points with six MVP awards and six NBA titles. Abdul-Jabbar made 19 NBA All-Star teams and was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1995. The offered goggles are made of transparent plastic and are not vision-correcting. The temples are not hinged, and the lenses are circular in shape. These goggles are an incredible piece of NBA history, inextricably tied to the career of the greatest scorer in NBA history. These goggles come with a LOA signed by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar himself.
