In many ways, baseball has served as a temporary respite from the tragedies that befall major cities. One of those instances occurred on April 15th, 2013, when a terrorist planted a bomb near the finish line of the famed Boston Marathon, which killed three people and injured over 250 others. With the city in mourning, the Boston Red Sox, who had completed their April 15th game earlier on that fateful day, stepped up to the proverbial plate. After a brief 3-game series on the road against the Cleveland Indians, the Red Sox returned to Fenway Park to face the Kansas City Royals for the first major event in the city of Boston since the bombing and the ensuing manhunt for the perpetrators. The moniker of “Boston Strong” was born to honor the victims and would be a them that carried that 2013 team to World Series title. Presented here is the jersey worn by Boston Red Sox left fielder Jonny Gomes, whose leadoff pinch-hit double to center field, started the 3-run rally that saw the Red Sox erase a 2-1 deficit and take a 4-3 lead. One of the memorable images from that game is of Gomes standing at second base flexing his muscles towards his teammates in the dugout. This white jersey was specially made for the April 20th game and deviates from the original home jersey. Instead of “RED SOX” sewn on the front in Tuscan font, “BOSTON” is arched across the front over the traditional red piping that adorns the collar and two sides of this this button-down jersey. A dark blue circle patch is sewn on the upper left chest with the Red Sox “B” logo in red and white, along with “STRONG” in white. This size 50 Majestic Cool Base jersey has the proper tagging on the lower left tail, including a white tag that reads “5 50 ‘13” indicating the player, size and year of the jersey. The back has Gomes’ number “5” sewn on in the McAuliffe-style font red and navy tackle twill and the jersey displays light use with some stains. To commemorate the occasion, Gomes and his teammates signed this jersey in red marker on the front with signatures also including David Ortiz, John Lackey (twice), Jon Lester, Dustin Pedroia, Jake Peavy, manager John Farrell, Jacoby Ellsbury, Shane Victorino, Xander Bogaerts, Koji Uehara, Jarrod Saltalamacchia and others. There are 33 signatures total and this jersey comes with an LOA from Jonny Gomes, who states in his LOA that he wore this jersey during the April 20th, 2013 game and that it has been in his personal collection, plus a LOA from JSA (XX19999) for the signatures.
