Led by Hall of Fame coach Lou Holtz, the 1988 Notre Dame Fighting Irish ended the season with 12 wins and no losses, winning the national championship. The Fighting Irish won the title by defeating the previously unbeaten and No. 3 ranked West Virginia Mountaineers in the Sunkist Fiesta Bowl in Tempe, Arizona, by a score of a 34–21 which was played on January 2nd, 1989. The game was broadcasted by NBC with legendary announcer Dick Enberg calling the action. To prepare for the NBC national broadcast, Enberg made a series of broadcasting notes that are now presented here. These notes are on two folded 17 3/4 x 12-inch sheets and were given to Lou Holtz, which comes directly from his personal collection.

A fascinating look at how Enberg prepared for broadcast with many details on the key players and starters for both Notre Dame and West Virginia. Enberg even personalized these sheets for Holtz by signing and inscribing these sheets in red marker. One sheet has inscribed “Lou – Congrats National Champions Oh My! Dick Enberg (NBC)”, while the other sheet has “1988 Nat’l Champs – Oh My! Dick Enberg (NBC)”. The 1988 squad, one of 11 national title squads for the Irish, is considered to be one of the best undefeated teams in the history of college football. Holtz's team beat the teams which finished the season ranked #2, #4, #5, and #7 in the AP Poll. The 1988 squad is best remembered for its 31-30 upset of No. 1 ranked Miami, ending their 36-game regular season winning streak.
