A very significant check signed by John Lennon. Just two months before he signed this check his partner Paul McCartney had announced the breakup of the Beatles. The self-destruction of the most popular band in the world send shockwaves around the globe and no doubt the earth was still trembling beneath Lennon's feet when he wrote this check. For the first time in almost a decade the four members were cast adrift to continue their musical careers separately. For John Lennon, this moment was the most pivotal moment of his career. For years it was both whispered and publicly stated that Lennon was the lone genius behind the group. Finally free of the constraints of a collective band, Lennon was faced with the daunting task to prove to both himself and the music world that he could make it on his own. Dated June 3, 1970, the check (made out by someone other than Lennon) is made out to Lugton & Co., a Scottish Brewery for £12.19. The check itself is a very attractive piece of banking art measuring 4" x 8". John Lennon has signed in a strong bold hand. Two punch holes are visible at the top with the usual bank stamps and cancellations. A red pencil mark is touching his last name and there is a show-through from two pieces of white tape on the reverse. Lennon's was always a tough signature to get and after the breakup of the band it became even more elusive to obtain. His assassination in 1977 made his one of the most sought after signature of any rock and roll musician to date. To find one that dates from the most pivotal moment in his career makes this piece all the more extraordinary. This remarkable check has been encapsulated and graded a MINT 9 by PSA/DNA.
