Graded PR-FR 1 by PSA. Presented is an E90-1 American Caramel "Shoeless" Joe Jackson candy insert, the true “rookie card” of the undeniably talented but forever-controversial slugger. While his exploits with the Cleveland Indians and Chicago White Sox are well known, not all collectors realize that Jackson actually got his start in the big leagues with Connie Mack's Philadelphia A's in 1908. It is absolutely amazing that the American Caramel Company included Jackson in the company’s 120-card issue: not even the much more comprehensive tobacco issues of the same period featured the budding star. Jackson only played in five games, in each year, before being shipped off to Cleveland for the 1910 season. Nonetheless, his likeness found its way into the E90-1 release. The offered card manages to defy significant aspects of its modest grade’s negative connotations. Although unmistakably worn and conceding various condition discrepancies, the piece puts forth a solid image of the athlete, with surprising strength in his depiction’s colors and features. The collectible’s edge and corner attrition is relatively uniform, the caption is sound, and the advertisement on the card’s back boasts full legibility. Generally Fair condition, but projecting a favorable aesthetic at a somewhat higher level. One of the most highly prized cards in our hobby!
