As fleeting as Barry Sanders was in slicing through defenses—changing directions on the drop of a dime in the process—so, too, was the Kansas-born running back in prematurely ending what was arguably the most prolific career of any running back in NFL history. Drafted by a woeful Detroit Lions team in 1989 (after deciding to forgo his senior year at Oklahoma State University), Sanders immediately brought a new-found electricity to the Pontiac Silverdome. With 18 yards on his first-ever carry, Sanders quickly set a precedent of lengthy runs to follow. Eclipsing the 1,000-plus yards mark in each of his 10 seasons in the NFL, Sanders became the first man to rush for 1,500 or more yards five times—and the only grid star to better the 1,500 mark in four straight seasons (1994-1997). Presented here is a signed Detroit Lions home jersey worn by Sanders during the 1998 campaign in the Motor City. The blue mesh pullover garment boasts the Canton enshrinee's number "20" affixed to the front, back and sleeves in white-on-gray block numerals. "B. SANDERS" is sewn in white tackle twill to a name plate above the number on the back. A satin-like synthetic fabric comprises the shoulders and sleeves, with white-on-gray striped patterns screened to each of the custom-trimmed sleeves. Blue stretch ribbed cotton lines the V-neck, with an NFL crest logo patch sewn to its front base. Tagging includes a “1998 Reebok Pro Line Authentic” label situated on the left front tail, a "Reebok – Size 44" manufacturer's label accompanied by a “4” L.B.” flap tag inside the collar, and a small laundry instructions tag. Sanders has placed his black marker signature (with the inscription, “’Game Used’”) on the numeral “0” in Sanders’ number “20” on the uniform’s back. The item reveals evidence of solid game use, with visible wear and several repairs. This item has been authenticated by PSA/DNA and MEARS.
