A nice, strong example of this seminal portrait of the 16th President. As soon as it was issued, this print was accepted as the finest portrait ever done of Lincoln, and in fact was claimed by a number of critics to be one of the finest engravings ever produced. Copies of this print were sent to many who knew Lincoln, and their reaction was uniformly enthusiastic. Amongst some who had high praise for the print were Robert Todd Lincoln, Gustave Dore, William Herndon, Edwin Stanton and Charles Sumner. Frederick Douglass even had the print on display in his home. Engraving, ABRAHAM LINCOLN, ([New York: Ticknor & Fields, 1866]), 20.75" x 16" on a 24.75" x 19.5" sheet, with credit directly the plate: "PRINTED AND ENGRAVED BY Wm. E. MARSHALL." A few tears (repaired on verso) and a small loss in the blank area at bottom, not affecting the engraving, light foxing, else fine condition.
Comes with letter of authenticity from University Archives
