When remembering Muhammad Ali, it is sometimes easy to forget just how imposing a figure Sonny Liston was when Ali defeated him. Prior to Ali’s (Clay at the time) first fight against Liston, Liston had just won the World Championship having knocked out Floyd Patterson twice in the first round of fights just ten months apart. The Ring magazine ranked Liston as the seventh greatest heavyweight of all time and Johnny Tocco, a trainer who worked with George Foreman and Mike Tyson as well as Liston, said Liston was the hardest hitter of the three.
This 16 x 20 framed and matted photo captures Ali starting down the beaten Liston whom he just dropped to the canvas. The photo has been neatly signed by Ali in silver against the dark background in the photo and has been authenticated by JSA.
