American Olympic Athlete Leslie Byrd was presented this 1912 Olympic Trials Diploma to attest that Byrd was a competitor at the try-outs which were held by the American Olympic Committee. This diploma reads, “This is to certify that Leslie R. Byrd was a competitor at the try-outs held by the American Olympic Committee, for the purpose of selecting a team to represent the United States at the Fifth Olympiad held at Stockholm, Sweden in July 1912.” The diploma goes on to read, “Won Third Place in Throwing the Javelin showing a meritorious performance and was selected a member of the America Olympic Team.” During the 1912 Summer Olympics Byrd won the Silver Medal for the Discus Throw. Byrd also participated as a member of the USA National Baseball Team which competed in a single game match that was held as a demonstration sport in 1912. Diploma measures 19”x15H.” Please note, there is a small tear on the right side of the diploma and there is slight discoloration around the left-hand bottom corner.
