Those who saw it will likely always remember the mayhem that followed when Chris Chambliss hit KC reliever Mark Littell's first pitch over the right center field wall in the bottom of the ninth of the decisive game 5 of the 1976 ALCS. Thousands of fans stormed the field as Chambliss tried to dodge the masses to round the bases. After running through hordes of elated spectators on the field in trying to reach third base, Chambliss proceeded to seek safety by going directly to the Yankee clubhouse given as the area around home plate and much of the field was swarming with celebrating fans. Some time later, to make the run official, Chambliss was escorted back out onto the field to touch home. However, the plate had been stolen. He touched the area where the plate had been. Given the unusual circumstances, the umpires had determined the run would have counted the run regardless.
Offered here is a framed photo of Chambliss standing at home plate watching the monumental home run with fans celebrating in the background. Chambliss has also signed the photo and inscribed it “ALCS Walk off – 10/14/76.” Also included is an original ticket stub from the game.
